Social workers and mental health

What we do

  • The social workers and mental health professionals at Webutuck Central School District offer the following supports for our students and families:

    • Individual Counseling: Students who require intensive school counseling support may be referred for individual counseling sessions. This is a short-term service, which serves as a safe space for the student to discuss thoughts, feelings, and behaviors which impact them in the school setting. Additionally, skills such as coping with uncomfortable feelings, navigating social situations, self-advocacy, etc. are taught and practiced in individual counseling sessions.

    • Group Counseling: Students who require small group support for social, emotional and behavioral skills may receive group counseling. This is also a short-term service, which serves as a safe space for the students to discuss thoughts, feelings, and behaviors which impact them in the school setting.

    • Crisis Intervention and Follow-up: Any student who is experiencing a crisis may meet with a school social worker or counselor who will provide a space to de-escalate, process the triggering event, and make a plan to move forward. After the crisis is effectively managed, the social worker/counselor will follow up with the student and any other relevant parties. At times, outside referrals are made to further support the student.

    • Support Groups/Clubs:

      • Banana Splits- Banana Splits is a program to support students who are experiencing or have experienced parental separation/divorce.  (Gr. 4-6) (Gr. 1-3)

      • Diversity Club- Diversity Club is an afterschool club that provides a safe, inclusive space for all members of the school community, while fostering a school-wide appreciation of diversity.

    • Consultation and collaboration with educational team: At all grade levels, social workers and counselors work as an integral part of students' educational teams. From the mental and behavioral health perspective, they provide recommendations to promote student success using the multi-tiered system of support framework.
