District musicians perform with energy at winter concert

The middle school and high school musicians are turning their attention to their next show after performing in front of their family and friends at the winter concert held in the high school auditorium on Jan. 15. The spring concert is scheduled for May 15.

Winter Concert“We always talk about the things we do well, the things that we can do better and we try to make a plan for the future with what do we want to focus on and how do we get there,” said band director Eric Wiener.

The middle school band opened the winter concert with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” and Ray Flores’ “Dia de Los Muertos March.”

The high school band closed out the concert with Karl King’s “Bunker Hill,” Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “March from the Nutcracker Suite,” Henry Elston’s and Philemon Hou’s “Grazing in the Grass,” Charlie Parker’s “My Little Suede Shoes,” and Robert W. Smith’s “Fiesta La Vida.”

“Grazing in the Grass” featured a trumpet solo by junior Sebastian Melchor-Agustin.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Wiener. “The kids were enthusiastic. They performed at the top of their ability. It Winter Concertwas a good experience for them, so that to me is very rewarding.”

The high school and middle school singers presented their show between the two bands. The middle school chorus sang Leslie Bricusse’s and Anthony Newly’s “Pure Imagination” and W. Jack Rollins’ and Steve Nelson’s “Frosty the Snowman.”

The high school chorus presented Victor C. Johnson’s “Zum Gall Gall,” and Robin Pecknold’s “White Winter Hymnal.”

“The high schoolers really liked the ‘White Winter Hymnal’ because they got to learn how to do the body percussion and accompany themselves,” said chorus director Kaylee Kelsey. “It really takes some ownership of the music. It really takes it where they don’t have a track to lean on, they have to create their own music.”

The two choruses joined to close out their production with Kyle Pederson’s “Does the World Say?”

“Overall, it was a great show,” said Kelsey.

Freshman Alexis Heck sang with the chorus and played clarinet with the high school band. She said there were some nerves with performing in front of a crowd.

As for her favorite song she sang with the chorus or played with the band, Heck said, “I liked all of them.”
