Mrs. Allison Lape-Karpf

Welcome to

First Grade!

My name is Allison Lape-Karpf (I am called Mrs. Karpf at school!) and I am thrilled to be your child’s first grade teacher! First grade is an exciting  time in the lives of children. I hope to make your child’s learning experience a fun and exciting one, and help him/her learn to love learning about the world around them.  It is my goal to help each student become a life-long learner!

 Communication:

I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success.  Throughout the year, I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, emails, ClassDojo, quarterly reports and parent-teacher conferences.  I encourage you to feel free to contact me with questions or concerns that may arise during the school year. I am most easily available before school or you can send me a note or an email.  allison.lapekarpf@webutuck.org

You can leave a message with the school secretary and I will return your call as soon as possible.

Kids Stuff!Children will be receiving instruction in art, music, library science and physical education.  Please remember that for your child’s safety, sneakers should be worn on P.E. days (and on the playground!).  Art smocks can be stored in the classroom.

SNACK TIME:

We have a Snack Time everyday.   Please send your child to school each day with a “healthy” snack and a drink. A juice box, or bottle of water and a small piece of fruit or vegetables, crackers, pretzels, etc. work well in the classroom.  Think healthy snacks! All snacks should be classroom friendly and students must be self-sufficient in eating them. Students should be able to peel, cut, seed, spread, mix, stir or drain his/her snack. If the snack requires a utensil, please remember to pack one. Students are welcome to bring a labeled, reusable water bottle.

Donations of crackers, pretzels, or dry cereal are always appreciated!

(Please do not send in any candy or gum!)

** Again this year we will be following a six day cycle-Days A through F. This schedule helps eliminate the same specials being affected on snow days and holidays.

** The classroom is equipped with toys and games for the children to use.  All children’s toys must remain at home. There will be times when they will be invited to bring a specific item but until then, all personal items should stay safely at home. Thank you in advance for your support with this matter.

 Homework:

Yes.  First graders do have homework! I will send homework home Monday through Thursday. Occasionally, I will send a special assignment home on a Friday. If a child is repeatedly failing to complete his/her work, I will ask that it be completed over the weekend.

The homework assignment is always something that we have worked on or has been introduced that day. It is a skill that needs to be practiced. Before the students are dismissed each day, I review the homework and the directions are explained. The students are always told and shown what is expected but might still need reminders and parental support when they get home! Parents/guardians, please sign and date the homework when it is complete. Then, have your child be responsible to put it in his/her folder (then put the folder in his/her backpack) and return it the following day. We are encouraging our first graders to be independent and responsible for themselves!

For first graders, birthdays are very exciting! Although we want to honor this special event, we also have a very busy schedule If your son/daughter would like to celebrate his/her birthday in school, please contact me before the big day. Your child’s favorite cookie, cupcake or another simple treat would be a great way to say Happy Birthday during our snack time. Again, please contact me to make prior arrangements. Thanks!

                                                                              And we’re off…

I am excited about getting to know all of my new students and for the opportunity to work with this group.  It is my goal to help each student achieve his/her full potential. I am confident that together with your support, we can make first grade a wonderful and engaging learning experience for your child. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Please send a note to school with your son/daughter, email me or leave a message with the office.

Sincerely,

Allison Karpf
