Harvest Parade is festive gathering for students, staff
Cillian Crow was dressed as Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo as he participated in the district’s annual Harvest Parade and walked in front of Eugene Brooks Intermediate and Webutuck High schools.
The elementary students were greeted with high-fives, compliments and smiles from EBIS and WHS students and staff standing on the sidewalk in front of the schools.
“It was awesome,” said Crow, a first grader. “I found my sister and a lot of people said my costume was cool.”
Crow added why Halloween is his favorite holiday.
“It’s a holiday at night and you get candy,” he said. “You get to stay up and have extra family time.”
Jamie Wagoner, dressed as a character from Lord of the Rings,” recalled seeing family members and receiving high-fives during the parade before sharing what he likes about Halloween.
“I enjoy carving pumpkins and I get a bunch of candy,” the first grader said of Halloween.
The first graders returned to their classroom after the parade where they enjoyed a Halloween party.
“It’s great fun. It’s awesome,” said first grade teacher Karen Kleespies. “To see such joy when they come in with their costumes and to show off their costumes with the smiles and the twirls, it just brings a smile to your face.”
Kleespies, dressed as Anxiety from “Inside Out II,” paraded with her students.
“It’s super exciting for them,” she said. “They love getting praise, compliments and high-fives from the older students. It bridges the community between our schools.”
Some elementary students later returned to EBIS to see how students and teachers from grades four through six decorated their hall with a “Monsters, Inc.,” theme.
“The spirit is in the air,” said Jennifer Hengen, principal of students in grades four through six. “It started as one simple idea and it got bigger and bigger.”
The elementary students each received a goody bag from the high school students and staff. The bag included some candy and items such as pencils and bookmarks
“It’s good for our students to instill pride in their costumes, feel proud of their costumes and have that recognized,” said Amanda Coppola, elementary school principal who dressed as Mike Wazowski of “Monsters, Inc.”
“All of the costumes are wonderful.”
