Intrieri finishes 15th at state cross country meet
Webutuck High School junior Amanda Intrieri said she enjoyed her first state meet and hopes to return for a second opportunity in 2023 to improve her place and time from 2022.
Intrieri placed 15th with a time of 21 minutes, 4.1 seconds over 5,000 meters in the New York State Class D championship race at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School near upstate Rome on Nov. 12.
“I felt pretty good,” said Intrieri of her race. “It was pretty chilly and muddy. I tried to stay close to the girls up top. I tried to finish strong. I’m happy with my place. My time was OK.
She added, “I enjoyed (the state meet) a lot. The people were very nice. The athletes were very caring and nice. It was a very good experience.”
Intrieri battled through chilly weather and a muddy course as it rained on Friday night and early Saturday morning.
“Everything was wet. She was one of the last races, so everything was all mud. They really had to worry about their footing,” said Webutuck coach Shawn Hosier.
Hosier said Intrieri was running in about 28th place in the final half-mile before a strong finish.
“We had a plan we talked about the night before,” said Hosier. “She did exactly what the plan was. She ran hard. It was a tough course. She had a pretty good time on it.
“It was a good experience. She’s confident and feels like she belongs there.”
Hosier said he and Intrieri realized with about a month left in the season that qualifying for the state meet was within reach. Intrieri qualified for the state meet by finishing third in the Class D race at the Section Nine championships at Bear Mountain.
Intrieri will take what she learned in 2022 and build on it in the 2023 season.
“I learned it’s very competitive,” she said of the state meet. “I would love to get the experience next year (at the state meet), and hopefully get a better time and place even higher.”
