Freshman McEnroe Named February’s Athlete of the Month
Abby McEnroe just completed a memorable first season with the Webutuck High School varsity girls basketball team. McEnroe and the Warriors won the program’s first sectional title in more than 25 years.
“It’s been really great. It’s been fun,” said the district’s athlete of the month for February. “It was so unbelievable that we won. It felt so good that all of us were there together.
“This team has gotten a lot better since the beginning of the season, and it’s crazy how far we’ve come. We all get along and can trust each other and our coaches. We’re all there for each other. If we make a mistake, we’re always there to help each other.”
Webutuck varsity girls basketball coach Ken Dawson sees McEnroe leading the Warriors in the future.
“She’s energetic,” said Dawson. “That’s the future of basketball right there. We have her as a freshman. It’s only going to get better. I see great things.”
McEnroe has been playing varsity soccer since seventh grade, playing striker. She is a defender for her travel soccer club in Beekman.
“When I play soccer, I feel happy,” she said. “I’ve been playing soccer my whole life.”
McEnroe hopes to play soccer in college where she plans to study to be a nurse or a surgeon. The oldest child of Klynt and Amy McEnroe, she’ll be following her mom and some of her aunts by entering the medical field as her mom and aunts are hospital nurses.
“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse or a doctor. I feel you’re always helping people and you’re there for people,” she said.
McEnroe has a younger brother, Turner, and enjoys spending time with her family and playing the clarinet, which she plays in the school band.
