Soccer, Basketball Player Selected December Athlete of the Month
Olivia Farnham decided it was time for something different.
“I played town baseball and I did not enjoy it,” said the December Athlete of the Month.
The Webutuck High School junior captain started playing soccer five years ago and now foresees herself playing soccer in college as she studies to be a registered nurse.
“It was an impulsive decision,” said Farnham. “I played travel soccer and I just grew to love the sport. I understood it really well and I was always pretty good at it.”
Farnham has been a starter since seventh grade for the Webutuck varsity girls soccer program. This year, she finished with seven goals and four assists for the Warriors, earning herself a spot on the Section Nine, Class C-D girls soccer all-star team.
As a sophomore in 2021, Farnham was selected to the New York State, Class C all-state fourth team after being named to the Section Nine’s all-section and Class C-D all-star teams. She also was chosen to the Poughkeepsie Journal’s first-team all stars.
“She’s as tough as nails,” said Mark Moren, Webutuck’s varsity soccer coach since 1998. “She’s a very strong and aggressive player.”
Farnham said Moren has been a great teacher of the game.
“I’ve learned a lot from him,” said Farnham. “I started in seventh grade, so I’ve been with him for a long time and I just learned how to adapt to certain things.”
Farnham played center back in 2022, but was used at other positions depending on the situation in the match. In the center back position, she’s one of the defensive leaders.
“Communication is very important just so everybody knows what’s going on, and especially if others don’t know what to do, you’ve got to help them out so they can through it.”
“Even if you mess up, you can’t be down on yourself because the whole team goes down with you.”
Farnham is taking biology and pre-calculus at Webutuck for six college credits through Dutchess Community College. In addition, she’s been competing at college showcase tournaments in hopes she’ll be spotted by a soccer coach from a college or university with a good nursing program. She also is currently a starter for the Webutuck girls varsity basketball team.
Farnham plans to pursue a career as an emergency room nurse.
“I’ve always been interested in helping others,” she said.
