Hard-working runner named October Athlete of the Month
Webutuck High School junior Amanda Intrieri was named October’s Athlete of the Month and is able to balance her schoolwork, a job and around 10 hours of training a week all with ease.
Intrieri started running in seventh grade. Before recently completing her first season of cross country running, Intrieri initially dabbled in track, according to her proud coach Shawn Hosier.
“She’s one of the hardest working athletes I’ve ever coached in over 18 years,” Hosier said. “She runs hard.”
Intrieri is proud to have received this honor and said what she loves the most about the sport is going against fellow students that are much faster than her.
“I feel very honored,” Intrieri said. “I just like running in competition.”
Hosier finds that Intrieri is coachable and receptive to all advice because she always wants to do better.
“She wants to learn,” the coach said. “I just give her the instructions and the motivation, but she’s the one who produces everything.”
The great coaches and nice teachers always helping her out is Intrieri’s favorite part of being a student at WHS.
The junior will sometimes stay up late to catch up on her schoolwork, but still finds time to work a part-time job at Carlette Farm in Hyde Park where she works with horses. She aspires to be a veterinary technician in the future.
“I like working with animals,” she said. “I’ve always loved horses.”
The advice Intrieri would give to anyone following in her footsteps is simple, but very meaningful.
“Stay motivated, never give up, work hard and stay focused,” Intrieri said.
