Student volunteers recognized at board meeting

Luis Camargo Vazquez smiled as he recalled being a student volunteer in the district’s English language learners summer program. Camargo Vazquez was one of seven students recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting for being volunteers.

“I was there to support the kids, showed them how to draw, cut the paper or cut it for them,” said Camargo Vazquez, an eighth grader who received a certificate at the board meeting in front of his family. “If they needed anything I was there.

“I like seeing the kids smile when they see me coming. That’s the most rewarding thing for me. I’m probably filling their hearts with joy, and they know they have me to rely on if they need any help or have a question.”

The program completed its 21st year with 54 participants, two teachers and seven volunteers – Camargo Vazquez, sophomore Thatyana Bermudez, eighth grader Yessica Pap Ixim, and seventh graders, Allison Rotavista, Guadalupe Juarez, Kimberly Bermudez and Dany Xo Coc. Teacher Monica Baker is the director of the program.

“We never officially recognized the kids before. This year we said maybe we should do a little bit more for them. They’ve given up so many hours of their summer,” she said.

Baker added, “Having those older students is so incredibly helpful. They’re role models and they really jump in and help with all aspects of the program.”

The program’s continued growth meant a second teacher was needed and Alyssa Plastini came on board this year to lead a second class of students.

“I really loved it,” said Plastini. “I’ve always been inspired by Monica’s summer program. I’ve always volunteered there and popped in. The kids love it and I love hearing them speak their home language and learn English. It’s a really great experience.”

With school now in session, students are sharing stories of their theme weeks and field trips during the summer session.

Camargo Vazquez is already talking about being a volunteer next summer.

“I just want to see how much they grew and how much more they know. I just want to see them again,” he said.
