Lindquist assisting students in completing daily tasks

Nicole Lindquist is a new district employee as an occupational therapist after serving in the same role for two years in the district through a contract with an agency.

“I really like the small community,” said Lindquist, who grew up in Pine Plains. “The staff is very friendly. They’ve been very welcoming even before I was hired by the district.”

An occupational therapist helps students complete their daily tasks. Lindquist said she works with students one-on-one or in small groups with up to five students.

“Every kid is different and has different needs,” she said. “Some students need to do something relaxing for five minutes before you put work in front of them. Some students need to get their energy out.”

The first part of a session could be activities such as Yoga or running through an obstacle course. The final few minutes of a session is another movement with the type of activity depending on the student.

Lindquist shared why she chose to be an occupational therapist in a school.

“Kids are so fun,” she said. “They’re funny.

“I like helping them where they’re able to be functional with their peers and they’re able to carry it over to the classroom.”

The Stissing Mountain Junior/Senior High School graduate received her bachelor’s degree in health science and master’s degree in occupational therapy, both from Russell Sage College in Troy. She enjoys reading, doing picture puzzles and spending time outdoors with her dog Auggie.
