The First PTA meeting of the year was held on Monday September 21, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at WES.

All administrators were present and each one introduced themselves and spoke briefly about the beginning of the new school year.

Erin from the North East Community Center spoke about the after-school child care programs they are offering this year. Presently, the after-school program for K- 6th grade is held at the Millerton Elementary School. The students are bused to the site, and they are supervised until 6 P.M. Homework help, activities, and snack, along with some field trips, are provided. As of November, the after-school program for 4-6 will be held at the Eugene Brooks Intermediate School. Along with the usual program, students will also be able to pick certain short term clubs. The Community Center also sponsors very successful after-school clubs for 7th and 8th graders. Information and forms are available in the school offices or contact the Community Center directly at (518) 789 4259.

Sarah Bellora, from the Millerton Library spoke about the new programs the Library is sponsoring. Monthly Saturday programs are geared toward the elementary aged child  and special program for 'tweens and up' include recording music and filming videos. A graphic novel workshop is also going to be offered. Registration is necessary for some programs; look for the Library flyer or contact the Millerton Library for more information.

Members of the district's Wellness Committee explained that the group has been working on recommendations to the Board of Education for a Wellness Policy which would include, but not be limited to, the areas of nutrition, physical and mental health. The draft has been presented to the BOE. The committee will participate at Community Day on October 3rd, at the high school, and their next meeting is October 20th at 6PM in the high school cafeteria. ALL are welcome to attend.

The 2009-2010 PTA Budget was presented by Treasurer Mary Murphy and there was a brief discussion about the items being funded by the PTA this year. Projected income was also presented. The budget was passed by those present and President Sue Pomeisl noted it is a

working budget and will be adjusted as needed. Mary also mentioned that the PTA is responsible to file a tax return - even though we are tax exempt - and the cost for this last year, and proposed for this year, is about $800. She asked if anyone knew an accountant who might be willing to work with the PTA for a reduced fee.

Every three years the Bylaws for the PTA must be reviewed and if necessary, revised and sent to the Regional PTA in order for us to remain active and in good standing with the National and State PTAs. A few minor revisions were made - reducing the # of Vice Presidents from 4-3 due to the change in buildings - and those present voted to accept the bylaws.

The PTA membership drive has begun, and 22 members joined on the spot. Please look for the membership form and return it with your $5.00 per person dues/donation. Your membership helps fund the yearlong programs and events sponsored by the PTA.

Thanks to Gulten Caldas and Sherry Valyou for helping at picture day.  The children always enjoy getting special attention.

Thanks to the many families who participated in the fundraiser.  If you have suggestions for future fundraisers or suggestions for spending the money, feel free to contact any PTA officer.

The Playground Committee had a meeting recently and discussed the pros and cons of the playgrounds at WES.  The teachers and staff will continue to observe the use of the current equipment before determining the best way to spend the money that has been raised.  As the
