Have you noticed the pink flamingos on lawns throughout our area recently? Are you wondering what they are for? The students in the Webutuck French Club are having fun with a fundraiser for their trip to Guadeloupe in November. Family, friends and neighbors of the French students are supporting the students' efforts to help offset the cost of the trip. Each stop in the Webutuck community brings the birds (and students) closer towards their final destination of Guadeloupe. A donation from each stop sends the pink flamingos to the next welcoming lawn. You never know where they will land - they have been sighted from Wassaic to Millerton.
Click on the link below to see some of the 'flockings'.

The Webutuck French Club's Flamingo fundraiser is set for 'flight'.

The Webutuck French Club is going to the French island of Guadeloupe in November. Twenty six students, staff and parent chaperones will spend eight days immersed in the French island culture. The group will converse in French, experience the art, history, dance and culinary specialties and explore the island's rainforest, volcano, underwater habitat and mangroves. The group is extremely excited for this truly unique, hands-on educational experience and are hoping to offset the cost of the trip with this fun -fundraiser.

The students will be approaching friends and family for donations that will enable a flock of very pink flamingos to travel from lawn to lawn on 'the way to Guadeloupe'. The birds mysteriously migrate in the evening and no one knows exactly where they will land each time. Well wishers for both the flamingos and the French students have the opportunity to host the birds for the day and also suggest the next stop on the birds' itinerary. As you pass the flamingos in the Webutuck community, please honk as you drive by, it shows your support and makes the birds feel welcome!

If you, friend or local business owner, are not approached by a French student but would like to support their travel, please contact
Joanne Boyd, kjsmbjboyd@optonline.net, 845 373 7805 or
Gazella LeJeune, leth@optonline.net, 845 373 4391,

and we will arrange for the pink cuties to grace your lawn. The French Club thanks you in advance for supporting them and they hope the flock of flamingos will brighten your day as you pass them.

The French Club is continuing to sell their raffle tickets; the drawing will be Monday October 17th at the Girls Varsity Soccer home game. There are two raffles, a Sports Sampler and a Community Sampler. For $1 a chance, or 6 for $5, you are eligible to win tickets to Marist Women's basketball games, Renegades tickets, a Marist hoodie or blanket, or a beautiful Hudson River print.
The Community Sampler is just that, an opportunity to win gift certificates to local businesses - Jack's Auto, Mane Street Salon, Fox and the Hare Salon, Roundtuit, Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, TriArts, and Lake Compounce - or a necklace from North Star Studios or a copy of the Gourmet Cookbook by Ruth Reichl. There is something for everyone. Again, thank you for your support.

Dear Parents:
With current national attention being focused on children’s health and wellness issues, Webutuck School District’s Food Service Department is excited to provide parents a convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service to deposit money into your child’s school meal account at any time. This service also provides parents the ability to view your child’s account balance through a web site called MyNutrikids.com. By having money in each child’s account prior to entering the cafeteria, we find the lunch lines move along much faster so your child has more time to eat and be with friends.

Also, parents will have the ability to print out a copy of their child’s eating history report. This history report will show you all dates and times that your child has purchased a breakfast and or lunch within the past thirty days.
These new services will be available September 1, 2011.

To access these services:

  1. Simply go to the district web site at www.webutuckschools.org.
  2. Click on the Cafeteria link.
  3. Click on the MyNutrikids.com link. From this site you will create your account and add money to your child’s school meal account. All you need is your child’s name, student ID number and school ZIP code. The instructions to guide you through the easy online account set up process can be found by clicking here. Complete Instructions
Things to know:
  • If you have more than one child in the District you can handle all online prepayments from the same online account.
  • Payments may be made through an existing PayPal account or with a major credit or debit card.
  • In order to use the online prepayment service, a small convenience fee for each transaction will be assessed to cover the bank fees. The convenience fee is $1.75 per deposit transaction. Parents placing money into multiple meal accounts will only be assessed the $1.75 fee once per deposit transaction. Webutuck School District will not profit from the use of this site.
We are very excited to offer these new services, in direct alignment with the District’s Health and Wellness priorities, and are confident this new system will benefit you, your child and our District. However, if you choose not to take advantage of the online prepayment service you may continue to make advance payments via check, which should be made payable to the Webutuck School District. Please write your child’s full name on the check.
If you have any questions about these new services, please feel free to contact my office at 845-373-4100.

Best Regards,
Mary Grden, School Business Manager

My name is David Paciencia, and as of July 1st I have been serving as your Interim Superintendent until a permanent new Superintendent of Schools is found and appointed by the Board of Education. You might remember that I served you in this capacity a couple of years ago. Please be assured that all of the routine work that is normally associated with the summer is being addressed presently as part of my function here in the district. Additionally, we are aggressively working toward filling all of the remaining teaching vacancies. I am confident that we will be fully staffed very shortly. One area where you can be a big help to us is in the area athletics. It is very difficult lately to find certified coaches. If you know of someone who is certified and interested in coaching, our Director of Athletics would appreciate the phone call. Those vacancies are normally advertised in our local newspapers.

Many of you have become accustomed to reading the “Weekly Warrior” newsletter. We intend to make this a newsletter for you during the ten months when students are attending school. By doing so, this newsletter will assist our desire to keep you informed and involved in the various school activities. With the economy and local budgets as they are currently, this newsletter may become a monthly or perhaps a bi-weekly publication. We are not sure yet. Over the summer, if any issues arise, we will use the “Key Communicator” electronic communications to keep you informed.

Please be aware that the Board of Education has elected its officers for the new school year. The President is Mr. Dale Culver, and the Vice President is Mr. William McGhee. Meetings of the Board of Education are listed on the District’s website (www.webutuckschools.org), and all meetings of the Board of Education are open to the public. These meetings normally occur twice each month (calendar permitting) at 7:30 P.M. in the high school library.

I look forward to a very positive and smooth opening of school on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 for all of our students. I hope all of you have a relaxing and enjoyable summer. Thank you for supporting the Webutuck Schools, its students and its programs.

Dave P., Interim Superintendent

To: Parents/Guardians of 6th Grade Students
From: Cathy Christofel RN
Date: April 14, 2011
Re: 7th Grade Physicals

Modified Sports will begin in September 2011 for your 7th grade son/daughter. Many of the current 6th graders have already expressed an interest in playing one of the following sports: Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Girls Field Hockey, Golf, Girls Volleyball or Cross Country.

New York State requires that all students in the 7th grade and those participating in a sport have a current physical. If your child has had a physical dated September 2010 through September 2011 it will be valid for both sports and their 7th grade requirement.

A physical form is located on the back of this form for your convenience. If your child requires medication such as an inhaler or EPI PEN please have his/her doctor fill out the medication administration and self carry forms that are located on the school web page. You may also obtain any of these forms from the health office.

Our school doctor will be conducting sports exams in the beginning of May. I have a limited number of slots available. If you are interested in having the school doctor perform this exam please call me at 373-4114, ext 117, to reserve a slot for your child.

IF you or your son/daughter anticipate trying to “test up” for a JV or Varsity sport you MUST CALL Mr. Rob Wood at 373-4114 ext 147, prior to your child’s physical.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.

We are now moving into the winter season of Basketball and Cheerleading. This may not be one of our District’s top programs but I would not trade our kids and our coaches for anything. Our student-athletes give everything they have from the first jump ball to the final horn. It does not matter if it is a close game or lopsided, win or lose, our teams give everything they have with dignity and sportsmanship. This is a tribute to our student-athletes, but also a sincere emphasis in my selection of coaches. Everyone involved in our basketball and cheerleading programs are people you can believe in and have faith in.

To highlight how our programs do not go unnoticed, a year ago in the Hudson Valley Sports Report, an online sports report, an essay was posted by the Captain of the Spackenkill Girls’ Basketball Team. It is attached below, please take a moment to read it and you will know why I have nothing but pride and admiration for OUR kids, you can also.

“ Normally I’d open with individual shout outs, but this a “TEAM” week so I’ll save them for the Thompson Top 5 later in the week. As I thought about who I would name the Thompson “TEAM OF THE YEAR”, I had to think about what high school basketball is all about. I had to ask myself what were the qualities that made a basketball team worthy of notice. Is it simply wins and losses or individual statistics? Or is there something more to this game I love so much? After some thought, I realized that there is so much more to this game than just the win loss column.

Sure it’s easy to look at a team’s record and pile heaps of praise on teams with great records. But if they are a team loaded with talent you would expect nothing less. Even I could look like a great coach if I was coaching a team with 5 Michael Jordan’s on it. Just sit back and enjoy the game.

But that’s not the way it is in high school sports. Coaches are given the task of putting together a team with the people that live in the district. So when I listed those qualities that made a team successful I looked beyond the wins and losses and focused on sportsmanship. Defining sportsmanship is kind of like grabbing jello with your hands – just when you think you have it, it slips away.

But for me it’s all about attitude and behavior. How did the team handle adversity? Did they quit playing in the games? Did they shout at each other on the court? Did they shake hands at the end? Did they have foul mouths? Did they stick together as a team the whole season? These are but a few of the factors I weighed when making my decision.

So after looking at things, my choice for the Thompson TEAM OF THE YEAR is ………. WEBUTUCK HIGH SCHOOL. I know some people will think I’m nuts and I can hear the gasps through the computer screen. But read on and you’ll realize I made the right choice.

Webutuck has lost every game they have played this year. They have their senior night this Tuesday (weather permitting again) while the 4 division winners square off in the MHAL semi-finals. So the first thing I want to do is to congratulate all the girls on their season and wish the seniors the best! Also, a big CONGRATULATIONS COACH CASLER on your new baby born on February 4, 2010.

Let me tell you what it’s like to lose and the adversity you face each and every game. I was on an AAU team - the first year of Triple Threat - and we lost over 20 games. We finally won our first game at the last tournament on Father's Day in June. I heard people look at the schedule board and say Triple Threat, easy win they suck. I know what it’s like to be told how bad you are each and every game you play. I know how hard we worked as a team and we still got blown out most games. It’s frustrating and I'm sure we wanted to quit many times but somehow, with the coaches help and encouragement, we stayed together. Nobody took the time to notice how we had improved as a team or what an accomplishment it was to finish the season.

We played Webutuck early in the year. They were a great bunch of girls. I don’t know any of them but I’m sure that if I did we’d be great friends. No arguing, no bickering, and they played hard the whole game. They showed up for practice and finished their season. They displayed positive attitudes and showed abundant sportsmanship at their games. So to the players and coaches, I believe your team truly shows the qualities of what it takes to be team of the year. Although you have not won a game, you and your team never quit or gave up, you always had positive attitudes, and you showed me what basketball is all about: HAVING FUN.

Your coach told me you are “a great bunch of girls” and I’m sure she is proud of each one of you. I want you to know that you have not been overlooked and someone has seen what you have accomplished this year as a team without winning a game. So my hat’s off to the players, coaches, fans, parents, and everyone else involved with the girls basketball program. Congratulations – you are the TEAM OF THE YEAR. Now go out and bring it on senior night!!!

Until next time, see you on the court. Cat

Rachel’s Legacy
Rachel’s Legacy is the next step in the Rachel’s Challenge program, picking up where we left off last year.

Rachel’s Legacy focuses on uncovering the amazing potential and value found in everyone. Students are challenged to open their minds and see just how great an impact one person can make in the world. This second year program incorporates more stories from Rachel’s life, as well as some of the stories we’ve been privileged to witness through Rachel's Challenge experience across the county.

Webutuck Jr./Sr. High School would like to invite and encourage students, parents, and the entire community to share in this powerful experience.  There is a presentation during the day for all students as well as training for those students interested in participating in carrying out Rachel’s Challenge.  There will also be a presentation open to the entire community on December 16, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the Webutuck High School Auditorium. All are welcome.  Please join us for this incredible story of courage and hope!

2010-2011

This summer of 2010 Sophomore, Claire Markonic, made the Field Hockey Team for Cross-River Combo from New Paltz, NY, as an alternate. She showed such great skill that she will join the team for the National Hockey 2010 Festival being held in Phoenix Arizona on November 25, 2010 to November 28, 2010. The world's largest amateur field hockey event, USA Field Hockey's National Hockey Festival traditionally attracts more than 3,500 athletes from across the United States, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean competing for titles in men's and women's divisions including women’s age group (Under 16 and Under 19), boy's age group (U16), women’s open and mixed. Previous divisions include men's open, sectional, masters (women 35+), and veterans (men 30+). Originating as the National Sectional Championships in 1922, the Festival adopted its current multi-divisional format in 1981 by introducing tournaments for high school-aged players and club and open teams.

Sophomores, Claire Markonic and Shannon Wood, tested and tried out for Futures Field Hockey Program in May of 2010 and found out they made the team in October. They will be playing at Skidmore College and Hartwick College.

Mission and Goals

The mission of the Futures Program is to regionally develop the best athletes for the purpose of identifying talented “future” Olympic level athletes, and to strengthen the level of field hockey throughout the United States.

The goal of the Futures Program is to develop the Futures athletes’ skills and understanding of the game. Skills and hockey concepts will be further developed through repetition and ball touches. By the end of the Futures Program, athletes will be identified for further development as well as the overall skill level of our athletes improved.

Today, this elite program features more than 4,800 athletes participating in specialized monthly training sessions from January to June that culminate with Regional Tournaments conducted through the program's 11 nation-wide regions. From the regional events, athletes may be selected to compete in the programs ultimate event, The National Futures Championship.

Superintendent’s Notes

In an effort to provide more timely information to our community, the Webutuck Central School is happy to introduce the “Weekly Warrior.” This newsletter will be typically distributed on Fridays when school is in session for an entire week and will have current news about educational issues, student and staff activities and general information about your community school. We hope that you find this publication useful in keeping you informed. We would request that all citizens of the community who have e-mail addresses provide us with your contact information so that we can provide the Weekly Warrior electronically, thereby saving printing costs.

MEET THE CANDIDATES NIGHT

The Webutuck Central School District Pre-K -12 PTA would like to help the community gain information about the candidates running for school board in the May 18 election. As a means to that end, we are hosting a “Meet the Candidates Night” on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the high school auditorium.

The night will consist of a brief introduction by each candidate, a question and answer period, and a closing statement. Questions can be written and submitted to the moderator to be asked of each candidate. All seven prospective board members plan to be in attendance. The candidates are as follows:

Victoria Alexander, Joanne Boyd, Heidi Dean, Andrew Jablonsky, William McGhee, Ann Sheeley, and Casey Swift.

The PTA encourages all community members to come out Thursday, May 13 at 7:00 and have your questions answered by the people who wish to represent your family on the school board. Remember, the school board makes important decisions that steer our children’s education and spend your tax dollars. This is a perfect opportunity to become an informed voter in the upcoming election on May 18.

Light refreshments will be served.

Dear Parents,

May is Family Wellness Month. Family Wellness is something that impacts every one of us. While medical health is important, Family Wellness Month emphasizes healthy family lifestyles and habits as well. The healthier each individual is overall, the healthier we can all be as a family!

In honor of Family Wellness Month we are asking the families in our school to help their children focus on two areas of wellness- exercise and healthy food choices.

We will be encouraging children to discuss these areas in school, and to talk about some of the good choices we all make to keep ourselves healthy. On the back of this page you will find a chart. Use the chart to record some of the healthy choices your family makes this week. Every child who participates and returns the sheet on Friday will get a prize!

A new sheet will go home each Friday in May, and the following Friday the children will get prizes related to the theme of exercise and good nutrition. We hope many of you will participate in our celebration of Family Wellness Month, and enjoy exploring healthy choices together!

Rachel's Challenge

Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America.

Powerful video/audio footage of Rachel's life and the Columbine tragedy holds students spell-bound during a one hour school presentation that motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others. This is followed by an interactive 45-minute training session involving both adult and student leaders that shows how to sustain the momentum created by the assembly. The assembly creates the “want to” or desire for positive change. The training session teaches the “how to” and ensures that the positive impact will continue.

That evening the Rachel’s Challenge speaker conducts a powerful session with parents and community leaders. This session is similar to the assembly program and ends with a specific challenge to parents and community leaders, showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making. Entertainers, politicians, sports celebrities, educators, and even two Presidents of the United States have been impacted by Rachel’s Challenge. However, students are the target audience and they have proven that they will respond with positive words, attitudes, and actions. Your school will never be the same after being exposed to Rachel’s Challenge!

Rachel's Challenge will be at Webutuck Jr/Sr High School on March 18, 2010 for two assemblies during the day and an evening session for the community at 7:00 pm. The assemblies during school will be in the Webutuck High School gym and the evening session will take place in the High School gym.

Pennies for Patients

During the month of February, Webutuck Jr./Sr. High School will be participating in Pennies for Patients to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Pennies for Patients is a community service project that helps teach students personal achievement, teamwork, and demonstrates the importance of helping someone else.

There is a kick-off assembly on February 3rd and the campaign runs from February 4th - February 26th.

Our students will be competing in Penny Wars. Each first period class will have 2 containers. Pennies will count as positives and silver and paper money will count as negatives. Competing classrooms sabotage their classmates containers by loading as many silver coins as they can to make a negative count. The classroom with the most money will win either a breakfast or pizza party!

Please contact Kristen Chadwick in the Guidance Office with any questions.
Thank you in advance for your support!

A message from Superintendent David Paciencia:

In the interest of safety for all of our students, please be advised that effective on Monday, November 16, 2009, we will be locking all doors to the schools until specific arrival times.  Doors will be opened at 7:15 A.M. at the Junior-Senior High School, at 8:40 A.M. at the Intermediate School, and at 8:35 A.M. at our Elementary School, known as WES.  Entry times for the Pre-K students at Millerton will be at 8:45 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. Students who are brought to school by parents will need to be dropped off at the appropriate time at the front entries, except at Millerton, and parents will no longer be allowed to walk their children to their classrooms.  Please be aware this change has been brought about after meeting with two police agencies.  Sadly, the times we are living in have changed greatly, and we are trying our best to take the necessary precautions to keep your children safe while in the school setting at all times.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and your cooperation.

Keeping you informed is a top priority at Webutuck Central School.  That’s why we have adopted the ALERTNOW Notification Service which will allow us to send a telephone or e-mail message to you providing important information about school events or emergencies. We anticipate using ALERTNOW to notify you of school delays or cancellations due to inclement weather, as well as remind you about various events, including report card distribution, open house, field trips, and more.  In the event of an emergency at school, you can have peace of mind knowing that you will be informed immediately by phone.

What you need to know about receiving calls sent through ALERTNOW

    • Caller ID will display the school’s main number when general announcement is delivered.
    • Caller ID will display 411 if the message is a dire emergency.
    • ALERTNOW will leave a message on any answering machine or voicemail.
    • If the ALERTNOW message stops playing, press any key 1-9 and the message will replay from the beginning.
    •

We are pleased to incorporate ALERTNOW as a tool to improve school-to-parent communications.  We look forward to having the ability to deliver real time information to you and to provide awareness of all the great events that take place within the school system.
