People Reading Everywhere Possible

Eugene Brooks Intermediate School is excited to kick off a brand new reading incentive called PREP- People Reading Everywhere Possible. The program will begin on Friday, February 19 and run through Friday, March 19. This program was developed by several EBIS staff to foster a love of reading and build a stronger sense of community within our school. Once children have become independent readers, like most 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, they achieve fluency and strong comprehension and are capable of becoming absorbed in books. The pleasurable experience of being absorbed in a book is its own reward, and doing so in a group becomes an extremely positive shared event. It also has a lasting impact - absorption is the basis for a lifelong love of reading that motivates children to read more and prepares them for the academic challenges that lie ahead. Our students at EBIS have been broken into 15 groups across grade levels to work with teachers they usually do not see. They will meet with their group each morning from 8:45-9:05 to read and discuss one book. On March 19, each group will watch the movie that is based on the book they have read. The following week, our children will write reviews of either the book or the movie, thus linking the reading/watching experience with writing. We are anticipating a memorable and productive experience for all!

Fifty students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade took part in St. Jude’s Math-a-thon this year. To participate, the students would get sponsors for the 250 problems they had to solve. By doing this, these fifty students raised $4005.01. This is an all time high for Webutuck. All the money raised goes to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, which treats sick children at no cost. Over the past 15 years the students of Webutuck have raised over $25,000.00 for St. Jude’s.
