PTA Newsletter
The Third PTA meeting of the year was held on Monday January
11, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at WES.
Welcome, Mr. Lee Bordick,
our new interim superintendent. Mr. Bordick
is a retired New York State superintendent; he was superintendent in Lansingburg, (outside Troy) for 23 years. He started
his career teaching science before entering administration. Since
retiring in 2007, he has been an interim middle school principal and interim
superintendent at Chatham. He has also taught at the College of St. Rose.
President Sue Pomeisl
began the discussion on Safety. There was a discussion about the changes in the
morning drop off procedures and it was suggested that more signage be placed so
the crossing on Haight Road between the schools would
be safer. Mr. Bordick also mentioned that the
Board of Education is contracting with a Risk Management company to assess our
campus. The results of this assessment will be given to the BOE in early
February.
Rebecca Cossa,
from the NorthEast Community Center, spoke about the
Community Garden project that is being planned. The committee hopes to
locate the garden at the high school and the intent is that all grades will use
the garden as an edible classroom. The produce would be used to supplement
the cafeteria when possible, be consumed by the students in the afterschool
clubs and be sold during the summer at the Farmer’s Market..
For more
information please contact the North East Community Center at (518) 789- 4259
There was a discussion about
increasing the publicity for the BOX TOPS program and Campbell Soup labels,
since it is an ‘easy way’ to raise funds. Tara Morey was thanked for her
help in organizing the box tops. There is a collection box at WES and
labels can be sent into the EBIS office since that box has temporarily
disappeared Reminder: Send
in your Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels with your child.

Membership
As of January 15th, we have a total of 136 official card-carrying PTA members;
about half are school staff, which is a great percentage of our staff.
PARENTS are a bit under represented! We have surpassed our goal of 120
members, thank you, but as always, we are looking for more!
If you are a parent of a pre-school student and you are just getting into the
'school thing', supporting the PTA is a wonderful start. If you are an
old-hand at this, and just haven't gotten around to sending in the membership sheet and donation, please do not put it
off any longer. National PTA is encouraging more participation of male
members since this is the first year a male has been the national PTA president
- two of our own Webutuck
officers are men --we know the rest of you are out there! So far, we have
25 male members, 17 are Webutuck
staff. Only one name can go on a card, there is no family membership, so we would welcome your spouse's membership if he has
not joined yet. Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Joanne
Boyd 373 7805, membership chair.
